Destiny 2: The Final Shape – My thoughts so Far

Okay, so. Destiny 2.

We all know it, we all have some feelings towards it.

Last week, the Latest, and possible Last expansion for Destiny 2 launched. The Final Shape is live and ready to play.

Or well, somewhat. Day 1 was a nightmare of network errors and disconnects. Not unexpected, but of course still very irritating to say the least. I, myself, actually missed a couple of cutscenes thanks to all the issues. Thank god for being able to replay the story missions.

The new zone, The Pale Heart, is quite an interesting place. It’s a nice mix of modern with nostalgia. I won’t get into details here, but know I’m a fan. The events that spawn are interesting and easy enough to complete solo, which is good because to date I don’t think I’ve seen another player running around like. I’m not sure if this is on purpose or not, but that’s fine as I’m not finding the lack of extra players a problem.

Story was, well it’s a Destiny 2 story line. We got some pieces and some insight, but there is presumably a big chunk still hidden in weekly updates and lore that you wouldn’t otherwise think to read unless you’ve been playing the game long enough to know how they like to hide things. Cayde-6 being back is fantastic, and while that statement is technically a spoiler, it’s on every announcement they ever posted so I don’t mind saying it here.

I’m enjoying the new Pathways system that seems to have replaced bounties. Again, more on that as I finish up the official review, but I think it’s a positive change for the game going forward

New Cayde-6 based weapons are, so far, quite fun and different to use. It’s more of a Borderlands feel to them, which I think is interesting. Nothing insanely crazy like Borderlands is known for, but there is no way they didn’t use it for inspiration with the newest sidearm, which shoots freakin rockets.

All in all, I think this expansion has a large amount of potential to be one of the best they have done, but it still has yet to be seen what the coming weeks and updates will hold. The full review will be available this Friday, 6/14/2024.
