Final Fantasy XIV: DawnTrail – My current Thoughts

The latest expansion has been out for a couple weeks now, and while I’m still waiting for the new raid tiers to be introduced before making a complete review, I feel its still okay to share some of my current thoughts.

All of this will have more details to come of course.

Let’s start with the new jobs, Viper and Pictomancer.
Both are, at least in my humble opinion, super fun to play.
Viper is more or less a typical melee job, positional requirements and all BUT there are ALOT of skills in use at all times. The job itself is quite busy to play, and maintaining proper uptime can be someone of a struggle. Pictomancer is, at the core, playing a Black Mage. Spells listed like such “Fire in Red”, “Blizzard in Blue”, etc and have similar looking particle effects but with a watercolor paint look to it. Along with some other cool features, like invoking art done on “canvas” to generate spells. There are more intricate details that I’ll go into with my Pictomancer only post, as well as one for Viper.

Story wise, I loved the expansion. Wuk Lamat is an amazing character, and it was quite nice to be a “supporting” character for the first time in the story lines. While some of the story was kinda, hamfisted in, for lack of a better term over all I was still very happy with the journey and experience.

The new dungeons, are something. The first one is, in my opinion, a little over tuned, but the base mechanics are pretty much the same and it wasn’t that bad to figure out. The devs put a lot more emphasis on moving throughout the fights this time around with all of them, which makes some of the newer fights quite chaotic, but pretty fun. Overall new dungeon set is about 7 or 8 out of 10.

New trials on the other hand, did not get favorable reactions from me.
While, at least the last one. The first one unlocked at 93 was actually pretty fun, the one unlocked at the end of the story is just a nightmare. I hated every second of it.

Post story end game is more of the same. Farm new tomes, buy new gear, etc. Much like before, Extreme trails are needed to get a second high level ring along with the rest of the accessories, but it’s not required by any means.
